Japan-Malaysia Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

On July 11, commenced at 9:30 a.m. local time (10:30 a.m. Japan Time) and lasted approximately 15 minutes, Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, who is visiting Malaysia to attend the ASEAN-related Foreign Ministers’ meetings, held a meeting with H.E. Dato' Seri Utama Haji Mohamad bin Haji Hasan, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia. The overview is as follows.
- At the outset, Minister Mohamad Hasan expressed his appreciation for Minister Iwaya’s participation in the ASEAN‑ related Foreign Ministers’ Meetings, of which Malaysia holds the Chairmanship. He emphasized that Japan has been a good friend and partner who has stood by Malaysia in both good times and bad, and asserted that Malaysia’s development to date owes much to Japan’s support. He further stated that they bear a shared responsibility to carry this relationship forward into the future and expressed his hope to advance cooperation not only in maritime security but also in emerging fields such as advanced technology, digital economy, and decarbonization.
- In response, Minister Iwaya expressed Japan’s intention to continue to work together with Malaysia in building a new future, and conveyed Japan’s willingness to advance cooperation in such areas as the Official Security Assistance (OSA), advanced technologies including semiconductors, and rareearths.
- Furthermore, the two ministers concurred to work closely together and to successfully co-host the Ministerial Meeting of the Conference on Cooperation among East Asian Countries for Palestinian Development (CEAPAD) scheduled for the afternoon of July 11.
- Additionally, at the outset, Minister Iwaya also presented to Minister Hasan an origami artwork crafted by the Malaysia Origami Academy, depicting the logo of the ASEAN Chairmanship Year.
