Japan-Malaysia Summit Telephone Meeting

On April 16, commencing at 3:00 p.m., for about 25 minutes, Mr. ISHIBA Shigeru, Prime minister of Japan, held a telephone talk with Dato’ Seri Anwar bin Ibrahim, Prime Minister of Malaysia. The overview of the talks is as follows.
- At the outset, Prime Minister ISHIBA expressed his gratitude for the warm hospitality extended during his visit to Malaysia in January this year and stated that he was pleased to hold the meeting with Prime Minister Anwar again, who demonstrates leadership as the ASEAN Chair. In response, Prime Minister Anwar expressed his appreciation for Prime Minister ISHIBA's visit and stated that he was pleased to have the opportunity to exchange views once again.
- The two leaders discussed a wide range of economic issues, taking into account the impact of the U.S. tariff measures and China's retaliatory actions on the global economy and the multilateral trading system. Prime Minister ISHIBA pointed out that the current situation also directly affects Japanese companies operating in Southeast Asia and contributing to local economies. He stated that he would also like to listen intently to the voices of Southeast Asian countries.
- Prime Minister ISHIBA noted that maintaining and strengthening a free and open international order based on the rule of law, with the engagement of the United States, is in the common interest of both countries. The two leaders concurred on the importance of working closely together on it.
- Furthermore, the two leaders exchanged views on bilateral relations and regional situations and reaffirmed their commitment to cooperate on these issues.
