Japan-Malaysia Relations

On the afternoon of August 6, Mr. Fumio Kishida, Minister for Foreign Affairs, held a short meeting with H.E. Dato’ Sri Anifah bin Aman, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia,in Kuala Lumpur, on the occasion of the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) Ministerial Meeting during his visit to attend the ASEAN related Foreign Ministers meetings. The overview is as follows.

1. In light of the confirmation of wreckage from a Malaysian Airlines aircraft that went missing in March last year, Minister Kishida expressed condolences on behalf of the Government of Japan.

2. Following that, Minister Kishida explained that Japan will do its utmost to support Malaysia’s efforts as the ASEAN Chair, along with explaining that Japan also hopes to cooperate closely on regional challenges. In connection with the South China Sea issue, Minister Kishida also stated that Japan is gravely concerned about the current situation.

3. The two ministers shared the view that the Japan-Malaysia relationship, which was elevated to a “Strategic Partnership” when Prime MinisterNajib, visited Japan in May this year, will be further strengthened.
