Japan-Thailand Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

On September 26, commencing at 9:55 a.m. local time (10:55 p.m. Japan Time) for approximately 30 minutes, Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, who is visiting the United States of America to attend the United Nations General Assembly, held a meeting with H.E. Mr. Sihasak Phuangketkeow, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand. The overview is as follows.
- At the outset, Minister Iwaya extended his congratulations to Minister Sihasak on his appointment as Foreign Minister. He also expressed his heartfelt condolences to the victims of the military clash between Thailand and Cambodia. He expressed his hope that both countries will continue to observe the ceasefire agreement and that tensions will be eased peacefully through dialogue. He also stated that Japan will continue to make efforts to promote de-escalation of the situation.
- Minister Iwaya also stated that, looking ahead to the 140th anniversary of Japan-Thailand diplomatic relations in 2027, as “Comprehensive Strategic Partner”, he expressed his intention to further deepen the relationship between the two countries, including in the economic field. He also conveyed Japan’s continued strong support for Thailand’s OECD accession process, noting that Japan will support the holding of the second AI workshop for Southeast Asian countries organized by the OECD, following its first event which was successfully held in Bangkok. Furthermore, the two foreign ministers exchanged views on bilateral economic and people-to-people exchanges and concurred on continuing close cooperation.
