Prime Minister Abe Meets with the State Counsellor of Myanmar


On October 21, commencing at 10:25 a.m. for approximately 15 minutes, Mr. Shinzo Abe, Prime Minister of Japan, held a meeting with H.E. Ms. Aung San Suu Kyi, State Counsellor of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, during her visit to Japan. The overview of the meeting is as follows..
1. Opening remarks
Prime Minister Abe stated, “I would like to once again express my respect for your efforts for democratic nation-building of Myanmar.” “Japan will continue to provide maximum support by bringing together both its public and private sectors.” In response, State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi stated that she was honored to attend the Ceremony of the Enthronement of His Majesty the Emperor at the Seiden and expressed her heartfelt sympathy to those affected by Typhoon Hagibis.
2. Situation of Rakhine State and peace process in ethnic minorities’ areas
After stating that Japan will provide maximum support for Myanmar’s efforts to improve the situation of Rakhine State, Prime Minister Abe urged, “With regard to the alleged human rights violations in Rakhine State, it is indispensable that the Myanmar government and military promptly take appropriate measures according to the recommendations of the Independent Commission of Enquiry.” In addition, Prime Minister Abe noted, “It is essential to create an environment conducive to the repatriation of displaced persons.” Regarding the peace process in the ethnic minorities’ areas, Prime Minister Abe stated, “Japan will continue to provide support for advancing the peace process, together with Mr. SASAKAWA Yohei, Special Envoy of the Government of Japan for National Reconciliation in Myanmar.” Regarding the issue of the Rakhine State, State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi responded that she intends to address this issue correctly and will not hesitate to take necessary measures. She also expressed her gratitude to assistance by Special Envoy SASAKAWA and Japan for the peace process in the ethnic minorities’ areas of Myanmar.
3. Regional situations
Prime Minister Abe requested continued understanding and cooperation towards the early resolution of the abduction issue. In response, State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi expressed her full support for Japan’s position.
4. Other
Prime Minister Abe and State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi also exchanged views regarding the promotion of investment and creation of employment, including development of the Thilawa Special Economic Zone.
