December 20, 2013
Commencing at around 11:30 a.m. on December 20 for approximately 15 minutes, Mr. Shinzo Abe, the Prime Minister, received a courtesy call from His Excellency Mr. Nabil Fahmy, Foreign Minister of the Arab Republic of Egypt, who was on his visit to Japan. An overview of the meeting is as follows:
1. Prime Minister Abe stated that Egypt is a major power that constitutes a nucleus of the Middle East and that Japan emphasizes its relationship with Egypt, and expressed his expectation that Egypt would be stabilized and be developing following the “Arab Spring.” Moreover, Prime Minister Abe stated that since the security in Egypt has been restored, he expected that the number of Japanese tourists to Egypt would increase. Prime Minister Abe highly appreciated the policies of the Interim Government that it would steadily implement the road map, and added that while maintenance and improvement of security are extremely important, it is also important whether human rights including freedom of speech are protected. Then, Prime Minister Abe stated that the Government of Japan would provide support in various fields, including the economy, for the democratization of Egypt.
2. In response to this, Foreign Minister Fahmy stated that the Government and people of Egypt are committed to the implementation of the road map and construction of a democratic system. Foreign Minister Fahmy also stated that the Government of Egypt would be required to balance between maintenance of the security as well as the regime and the open politics including freedom of expression, and the Government of Egypt, by steadily enforcing laws in a non-violent manner and advancing the road map, would unite the people of Egypt as one. Moreover, Foreign Minister Fahmy expressed his gratitude for the generous and longstanding supports from Japan and added that since the field of education is particularly important, it would be important to enhance the Egypt-Japan University of Science and Technology (E-JUST) and e-business in Africa, which have been promoted under Prime Minister Abe’s initiative.
