Courtesy call on Prime Minister Abe by H.H. Thura U Shwe Mann, Speaker of the House of Representatives of Myanmar


On November 29, commencing at 2:30 p.m. for approximately 20 minutes, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe received a courtesy call from H.E. Thura U Shwe Mann, Speaker of the Pyidaungsu Hluttaw and Pyithu Hluttaw, the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, who is currently visiting Japan on the invitation of House of Representatives. The overview of the meeting is as follows.
1. Prime Minister Abe stated that Japan welcomes the role that Speaker Shwe Mann is playing in realizing a democratic and open Myanmar, and that Japan will continue to support efforts of in Myanmar for democratization, strengthening the rule of law, national reconciliation, and economic reform. Noticing the importance of next year as the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Myanmar, and Myanmar’s ASEAN presidency, he stated that Japan intends to further deepen exchange and cooperation with Myanmar. Prime Minister Abe also expressed his hope to realize continued economic development in both Japan and Myanmar based on support for the improvement of legal systems and the early conclusion of a bilateral investment agreement.
2. Speaker Shwe Mann responded by expressing his gratitude for the support from Japan, and explained Myanmar efforts related to reforms, domestic peace and stability, in particular, and the improvement of legal systems for facilitating foreign investment. He also expressed strong hope for Japan’s cooperation, emphasizing that it will be critical for these efforts to be effective.
