Continuing government involvement, typically seen in the Arrangement, can only have a negative effect
There is a prevailingly firm belief in Japan that the Japan-United States Semiconductor Arrangement need not be extended.
"Japan-United States relations are of foremost importance, but given the fact that foreign semiconductor manufacturers' market share in Japan has climbed to 27%, the Arrangement need not be continued."
* Taken from Tokyo Shimbun quotation of Minister of International Trade and Industry Shumpei Tsukahara on 11 January 1996.
"The Japanese semiconductor industry can be expected to continue to engage in cooperative activities based on commercial considerations. Further governmental intervention in the semiconductor marketplace is unwarranted."
* Taken from the statement issued by Mr. Norio Ohga, Chairman of the Electronic Industries Association of Japan on 2 November 1995.
