Women In Development (WID)

In the field of Women in Development, Japan and the United States are working together in two areas: girls' education and microenterprise development.

A joint planning mission, which was sent to Guatemala to increase girls' school participation there, proposed the following joint projects:

---Expanding the Eduque-a-la-Nina(Educate girls) program;

Supporting local non-governmental organizations (NGOs) involved in girls' education, and providing equipment and materials to aid elementary education for girls and mobile education services.

The grass-root grants contract was concluded in August 1995.

---Distributing teaching materials for use in girls' education;

Distributing booklets and tapes for use in girls' education. The grass-root grants are currently being considered.

---Developing teaching methods in girls' education and providing training;

Developing teaching methods and materials designed to boost school attendance rates among girls, training teachers, dispatching trained experts (due to begin this Spring) and providing equipment and materials.
