The Pacific Islands Centre (PIC), formally entitled the South Pacific Economic Exchange Support Centre, is an international organization established on 1st October, 1996 by the Government of Japan and the South Pacific Forum to assist Forum Island Countries (FICs) in sustainable economic development through the promotion of trade, investment and tourism between Japan and the FICs.
The South Pacific Forum, inaugurated in 1971, comprises fourteen FICs (Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia , Fiji, Kiribati, the Marshall Islands, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu) and Australia and New Zealand.
Aims
Under an agreement signed by the Government of Japan and the South Pacific Forum Secretariat, the PIC is dedicated to the following aims.
- To promote exports from the FICs to Japan.
- To promote the inflow of investment from Japan to the FICs.
- To assist the FICs with cost-effective importing from Japan.
- To vitalise tourist traffic from Japan to the FICs
Functions
The PIC carries out functions including the following for both the private and public sectors in the FICs and Japan. It is anticipated that the PIC's activities for the promotion of trade, investment and tourism will be augmented both in quality and quantity in the near future.
- (1) Provision of information and response to enquiries concerning the following.
- a. Trade
- Specific Japanese markets for products from the FICs
- Commercial systems in general in Japan
- Exporters and importers
- Introduction of products from the FICs
- b. Investment
- Investment climates and systems in the FICs
- Investment opportunities in the FICs
- Statistics on the FICs
- Introduction of investors to related organizations of the FICs
- c. Tourism
- Tourism resources in the FICs
- Flight schedules, hotels, travel agencies
- Visas
- (2) Dispatch of Missions

- Cooperation for the Exportable Bio-commodities Development Mission of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan to the FICs
- Cooperation for the Exportable Bio-commodities Development Mission of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan to the FICs
- (3)Exhibitions, Seminars

- Organization of exhibitions covering products and tourism resources of the FICs
- Organization of seminars concerning investment in the FICs.
The PIC conducts its activities in association with the Trade and Investment Division of the South Pacific Forum Secretariat in Fiji, the South Pacific Trade Commissions in Australia and New Zealand, the Embassies of the FICs and various trade and investment promotional organizations.
