II. Project / program description

  1. Objectives
    The main objective of the project is to generate adequate domestic and marketable food supply to feed the rapidly growing population, by increasing food production and productivity, in particular by reducing year-to-year variability of production, and to improve access to food. This is to be achieved using a multi-disciplinary and participatory approach on economically and environmentally sustainable basis.
  2. Activities / contents
    In order to achieve the above, the following activities are carried out:
    (i) to enhance food production and productivity of irrigated and rainfed crop production (rice, maize, vegetable, etc), livestock production and aquaculture through participatory demonstrations of the potential and benefits of proven and available technologies;
    (ii) to identify the limiting factors to widespread adoption of improved technologies for crop and livestock production and aquaculture, through a participatory approach involving all actors and stakeholders, using demonstrations as a vehicle for constraints identification;
    (iii) to induce policy change and facilitate policy adjustments for the removal of identified constraints and limiting factors, by engaging policy makers, national and local leaders, and farmers, through seminar, symposia, conferences and media;
    (iv) to prepare, through participatory methods, a realistic programme of capacity building and investment for the Expansion Phase.
  3. (Expected) outcomes / impacts:
    (i) improved levels of food security, through increased production, distribution and access; improved national capacity to enhance food security on a sustainable basis;
