II. Project / program description

  1. Objectives
    To optimize the use of existing facilities of the Port of Massawa, increase its productivity and capacity, raise its level of services to international standards.
  2. Activities / contents
    To provide equipment, facilities, civil works, technical assistance and training.
  3. Expected outcomes / impacts
    The project supports the economic recovery program contained in the Eritrean government's. policy. Ports play a critical role in the future expansion of the economy of Eritrea and of the whole Horn of Africa.
  4. Features in line with the Agenda for Action
    Ownership (Eritrea has designed its own strategy for the port rehabilitation, with the assistance of the Italian cooperation and the World Bank). Regional integration: The Port of Massawa is included in the list of Projects considered by IGAD of regional interest, for the role it can play in the development of trade in the whole Horn of Africa.
