II. Project / programme description

  1. Objectives
    The project serve as a bridge, linking highly successful lending institutions from Asia and/or Africa and the South African NGOs engaging in lending programmes for SMME(Small, Micro and Medium Enterprises). Experts from institutions such as Grameen Bank, Bangladesh Rural advancement Committee (BRAC) and Kenya Rural Enterprise Programme (KREP) offer expertise and advisory support under the UNV UNISTAR (UN International Short- Term Advisory Resources) modality, focusing mainly on skills transfer and capacity building .
  2. Activities / contents
    1. Conduct seminars and workshop on international lending methodologies and current development in small and medium- sized lending to 14 partners NGOs/CBOs.
    2. Assist in write-up baseline report and define success indicators with the participating NGOs.
    3. Provide on-site intensive counseling to lending institutions on lending programme operations.
    4. Develop formats for MIS reports which will be used by the Implementing Agency (Khula Enterprise Ltd.) to collect monthly and quarterly information from the partner NGOs.
    5. Provide practical training on monitoring and support systems to the National UN Volunteers (NUNVs) working within the project.
  3. Expected outcomes / impacts
    1. Participating NGOs/CBOs exposed to international best practices in micro-finance.
    2. Capacity of the NGOs in SMME sectors enhanced and self-reliance in the long run realized.
    3. South-South co-operation between Asia and Africa strengthened.
  4. Features in line with the Agenda for Action
    This project is in line with the RICAD II action plan under the heading of "Developing the Private Sector".
