II.Project / program description

  1. Objectives
    (1) Long-term: To foster enterprise development in Africa by strengthening the policy dialogue and promoting inter-firm networking and partnering within and outside national borders and region.
    (2) Immediate: To identify and draw up actionable guidelines and checklists regarding (a) "best practices" for public-private sector interaction and dialogues; and (b) effective, coherent and consistent measures and mechanisms in support SME and entrepreneurship development, public-private partnerships, and inter-firm networking and partnering within the Africa region.
  1. Activities / contents
    (1) Convening 3 international workshops (a) to review existing mechanisms and measures, (b) to suggest viable options and initiatives, and (c) to compile practical guidelines and checklists relating to immediate objectives (2.a) and (2.b) above. Total number of 100-120 African and Asian participants from both the public and private sectors, plus international experts and resources persons will participate in the three workshops.
    (2) Publication of workshop documentation, and guidelines and checklists for dissemination inside and outside the region.
    (3) Monitoring, tracing and follow-up regarding the impact of workshop outcomes.
  2. Expected outcomes
    (1) Greater appreciation of powerful public and private sector synergies in support of SME and entrepreneurship development, and inter-firm networking and partnering.
    (2) Improved policy and regulatory environment for private sector development, and greater readiness among African SMEs and entrepreneurs in initiating and forming domestic and cross-border inter-firm linkages and partnerships.

    (1) Approach and emphasis: (a) Regional cooperation; (b) South-South cooperation; and (c) Capacity building.
    (2) Area of cooperation: Private sector development: (a) promoting improved collaboration and partnership between government and the private sector; (b) sharing of international (African and Asian ) experience; and promoting inter-firm cooperation.
