II. Project / program description

  1. Objectives
    To remove the physical barriers of the insurance requirement at each border crossing point, and facilitate smooth movement of vehicles and goods. It also guarantees compensation to road accident victims.
  2. Activities / contents
    To extend the implementation of the Yellow Card to all COMESA and SADC countries to enhance the product and implement the harmonisation of Laws on Motor Road Traffic.
  3. Expected outcomes / impacts
    The implementation of the Yellow Card Scheme by all COMESA/SADC countries
    • Smooth movement of vehicles
    • Lots of money will be saved by transporters which they would have spent for buying insurance cover at each border crossing.
  4. Features in line with the Agenda for Action
    The Agenda for Action requires African Countries to promote regional integration by removing obstacles to cross border trade and investment. Implementing and expanding the programme will facilitate the free movement of vehicles from one country to the other, thus developing regional and global trade.
