II. Project / program description

  1. Objectives
    To improve road transport services in the project area and result in integrating the remote and poor areas into mainstream economic and social activities.
  2. Activities / contents
    To rehabilitate a 210-km bitumen standard road with a 6.0-m wide carriage way and 1.5-m bitumen surfaced shoulders.
  3. Expected outcomes / impacts
    About 1.5 million rural people, living along the section of the road, will benefit from its rehabilitation through increase in farming income arising from improved marketing of crops like maize, cotton, banana and tobacco. It will also result in reduction of the road maintenance and vehicle operating costs.
  4. Features in line with the Agenda for Action
    The project is expected to have a substantial impact on poverty reduction.
