II. Project / program description

Rehabilitation of an existing agricultural implements factory designed to produce ploughs, carts, hand mills, hoes and slashers.

  1. Objectives
    To assess and evaluate the design of agricultural implements and spare parts required by small local farmers and evaluate their suitable utilization in enhancing productivity. Develop a plan for the privatization of the plants in order to ensure its commercial viability.
  2. Activities / contents
    To regenerate SAIMMCO Ltd. and the company's capacity to manufacture agricultural machinery, etc. and to develop an engineering service capacity to cover regional demand for agro-industrial repair and maintenance facilities. To establish improved capabilities in design, manufacturing, repair, maintenance and quality control; a framework for the coordination of improved and integrated development of agricultural machinery, implements and spare parts; a marketing mechanism which is properly linked back to the manufacturing programme of the workshop.
  3. Expected outcomes / impacts
    SAIMMCO Ltd. was incorporated under the Uganda Companies Act and its building was reconstructed. An appropriate range of machine tools and equipment were selected and rehabilitated, installed, tested and put into operation. Raw materials have been purchased using investments funds provided by UNCDF. SAIMMCO staff trained staff in designing, modifying and developing equipment. Intensive on-the job-training has been given by project specialists. SAIMMCO adopted a marketing strategy and established a functional administrative system.
  4. Features in line with the Agenda for Action
    The project addressed the development of agro-machinery, farm tools equipment to contribute towards increased production to enhance livelihoods and contributing towards poverty alleviation.
