II. Project / program description

  1. Objectives
To increase awareness of the negotiation process in general as well as negotiating behaviour and the implicit working assumptions that underlie it.
To share an operational framework and analytic tools for preparing for and conducting negotiations.
To help improve skills in negotiation, joint decision-making, and joint problem-solving on the commercial and international levels and to refine those skills in the future.
  2. Activities / contents
During the course, such subjects as defining success in negotiation, guidelines for preparing and conducting negotiations, dealing with difficult behaviours, building a multiparty consensus for a proposal, and managing internal and external negotiations are explored. A good deal of time is also spent applying the analytical concepts and tools presented in the course to particular negotiating problems that participants bring with them to the course. This gives added impetus to the exchange of country experiences and information.
  3. Expected outcomes / impacts
At the end of the workshop each participant will:
    • Clearly understand the negotiation process and manage each of its different phases,
    • Obtain detailed knowledge of tested negotiating techniques,
    • Learn how to apply the methods of principled win-win negotiation,
    • Benefit from the maximum opportunity to practice these skills,
    • Learn how to get the best possible deal while improving relationships,
    • Have a network of African negotiators for TCDC.
