II. Project / program description

  1. Objectives
    To reduce childhood mortality due to diarrhoea diseases, Acute Respiratory infection, measles, malaria and malnutrition responsible for 70% of mortality in the under five year old.
  2. Activities / contents
    IMCI started in 1995 in the African Region with the support of DFID, USAID and other partners. The activities intend to improve case management in health facility and in the community the health system (Drug provision and management, referral system, supervision etc.) and enhance collaboration with other programmes.
  3. Expected outcomes / impacts
    • Countries of the African Region will benefit from now how and technology obtained through the implementation process of IMCI, and they will built national capacity ownership of the strategy and sustainable activity.
    • Improvement of case management of children under five year old
    • Reduction of childhood mortality.
  4. Features in line with the Agenda for Action
    IMCI will contribute to African capacity building
    IMCI will contribute to the reduction of childhood mortality in the African Region
