II. Project / program description
- Objectives
- To assist in improving the nutritional status of vulnerable children, pregnant and lactating mothers;
- To strengthen the capacities of the major hospital in producing fortified High Energy Protein Supplements to better control micro~nutrient deficiencies;
- To strengthen district nutrition education activities through sensitisation of household, pregnant and lactating women in particular on nutrition and reproductive health:
- To assist in improving the nutritional status of chronically ill patients, TB patients and orphans.
- Activities / contents
This supplementary feeding programme is a component of the WFP Zambia Country Programme 1998-2002. The project will help districts in promoting nutrition activities as an integral part of the health package delivered under the Health Reform Programme. It will also support existing Home Based Care programmes by providing essential food commodities to boost the nutritional status and increase compliance. Rations of high energy protein supplements (HEPS) and other commodities will be distributed to malnourished children under five; pregnant and lactating women; TB patients, chronically ill and orphans.
- Expected outcomes / impacts
- Nutritional assistance to 210,000 children under five, 18,000 hospitalised severely malnourished children 60,000 pregnant women and lactating mothers;
- Provision of training and equipment on HEPS production in major hospitals;
- Pilot HEPS production activities in three districts in Luapula Province;
- 14,672 households with chronically ill breadwinners fed for 5 years; 21,328 TB patients and 10,582 orphans fed with HEPS for five years.
