II. Project / program description

  1. Objectives
    By the year 2000:
    1. To have increased contraceptive prevalence rate (CPR) from the current 15% to 31%;
    2. To have increased the percentage of supervised deliveries by trained personnel from 38% to 60%;
    3. To have strengthened RH manpower capacity in 26 districts;
    4. To have improved the Health Management Information System (HMIS) for routine monitoring of RH services in 26 districts as well as the national level:
    5. To have strengthened the logistical facilities for RH services in the 26 districts;
    6. To have contributed to promotion of positive RH behaviour among 50% of the population in the reproductive age group in the 26 districts.
  2. Activities / strategies
    • Human resource and institutional capacity building;
    • Strengthening of RH outreach services, in particular the community-based distribution of contraceptives and the soliciting of private sector support in RH service delivery;
    • Expansion of the referral system for emergency obstetric care;
    • Support to policy, research and to the development of systems to manage RH information and logistics;
    • Strengthening of logistical facilities for RH services;
    • IEC activities for positive RH behaviour.
    • Supply of medical equipment, contraceptives and hospital consumables.
    • Supply of data processing equipment and transportation vehicles.
  3. Expected outcomes
    • increased contraceptive prevalence rate at an incremental rate of 4% every year
    • increased obstetric emergencies care coverage by 5.5% every year
    • reduced adolescent pregnancy by 50% before year 2001
    • Reduced maternal and perinatal mortality
    • Increase in accessibility and availability of quality reproductive health services
  4. Features in line with the Agenda for Action
    The project addresses Reproductive health, gender issues as well as capacity building needs.
