II. Project / program description
- Objectives
- To have increased the accessibility to RH services in 5 referral health centres (in 5 target districts) and their 20 adjoining health service delivery points;
- To have improved the quality and effectiveness of maternal and child health care and family planning services in 12 referral health centers and three regional hospitals in other parts of the country;
- To have stimulated the demand for reproductive health and family planning services, and
- To have decreased the rate of STDs among adults and adolescents.
- Activities / contents
A situation analysis of existing RH/FP services will be undertaken, a minimum package of RH/FP services will be defined, training will be provided for the staff of the Ministry of Health and the health staff, a training curricula on RH will be developed, Norplant will be introduced on pilot basis, contraceptives and technical and medical equipment will be provided, 10 health posts will be rehabilitated, operational research will be undertaken, special attention will be given to youth by providing counseling and services, general public will be sensitized on issues related to reproductive health, etc. - Expected outcomes / impacts
- Overall, to have improved the quality of life of the people of Comoros and to have decreased maternal mortality from an estimated 500 per 100,000 in 1997 to 250 per 100,000 in 2001;
- To have improved the quality of MCH/FP services in 26 health posts and 12 health centers, located in the other 12 districts, and in the three regional hospitals;
- To have improved the quality of the FP services provided by the private sector practitioners;
- To have increased demand for RH/FP services all over the country will particular emphasis on the 5 target districts;
- To have reduced STD/AIDS prevalence.

The project addresses population, health/RH and gender issues as well as capacity building needs.
