- Objectives
The project aims at increasing the contraceptive prevalence rate in the targeted areas from 4% in 1996 to at least 10% in 2001. - Activities / contents
The project strategy is based on an intersectoral and participatory approach which involves all principal stakeholders in project development and monitoring. The IEC activities will be implemented in areas where reproductive health services are available, but underutilized. The project will target the "poorest of the poor" living in remote, rural areas. In order to ensure sustainability of the project, micro-credit schemes will also be initiated. The following activities will be carried out: 1) inventory of all socio-cultural studies that have already been undertaken in rural Cameroon; 2) research on the socio-cultural factors that hamper the mobilization of community leaders to promote reproductive health; research on the reproductive health needs of the rural population, especially adolescents; 4) improving the capacity of NGOs to manage micro-credit schemes; 5) development of an IEC Strategy for rural areas; 6) design, production and dissemination of IEC materials, through radio programmes, public services spots, the print media and traditional outlets, such as street theater; 7) training young people as peer counselors; and 8) IEC training in inter-personal counseling for health care providers in all target areas. - Expected outcomes
1) reinforced technical capacity of 40 rural development agents and 100 community leaders to plan and implement effective IEC campaigns; 2) improved technical capacity of 10 team members in operational research, including the design, production and dissemination of IEC materials aimed specifically at residents in remote rural areas; 3) production of 40 radio programmes, 20 audio-visual and 50 theater scripts on reproductive health problems. - Features in line with the Agenda for Action
The project addresses health/RH, youth/adolescent RH, gender and capacity building issues.
