II. Project / program description

  1. Objectives

    Long Term:

    To reduce the health, social, economic and personal impact of HIV infection and AIDS through the active involvement and participation of people living with HIV/AIDS, families, community groups, inter-governmental and non-governmental organizations and other collaborating agencies.

    Immediate Objectives:

    (i) Establish an effective institutional care delivering structure (clinical and nursing care, counseling and social support, preventive services) linked by discharge planning and referral networks.

    (ii) Strengthen existing healthcare delivery structures and institutional framework to ensure sustainability.

    (iii) Develop a reliable database and information on HIV/AIDS

  2. Activities / contents

    (i) Provide training to public and community based healthcare personnel.

    (ii) Establish information education and communication centres to build-up community knowledge and increase awareness of risk and vulnerability of both men and women to HIV/AIDS

    (iii) Build partnerships and networks with national and international institutions for effective transfer of technology and knowledge on HIV/AIDS management.

    (iv) Develop community based monitoring and evaluation systems to facilitate quality control.

  3. Expected outcomes / impacts

    By the end of the third year:

    (i) 95% of HIV infected and their affected family members will have access to social and health infrastructure for needed care;

    (ii) 75% of the adult population will be covered by IEC activities resulting in substantial behavior change by the end of the programme; and

    (iii) 50% of those HIV infected and affected are equipped with means for sustainable livelihoods.

    (iv) By the end of the 5th year, demonstrated knowledge leading to attitudinal changes amongst the adult men, women and youth of HIV/AIDS transmission modes and preventive measures.

  4. Features in line with the Agenda for Action

    To achieve such goals specified in the Agenda for Action as Poverty alleviation for those living with HIV/AIDS, Health and Population enhancement and Education.
