II. Project / program description

  1. Objectives
    • To assist 3 National Societies to strengthen their overall institutional capacity to manage effective programmes that assist the most vulnerable, and to facilitate a process that shares experience in areas of governance, headquarters strengthening and branch development both regionally and inter-regionally.
    • To test and refine a system of capacity building indicators that can assess current status and measure performance.
    • To determine appropriate types of training / technical assistance that can positively influence the progress of a National Society's capacity building objectives.
  2. Activities / contents
    • Provide support for strengthening National Societies' government and management systems.
    • Help build capacity of Societies' local branches, and facilitate communications between headquarters and branches.
    • Strengthen National Societies' disaster preparedness activities.
    • Promote increased programme sustainability through developing local resource generation capacity.
  3. Expected outcomes / impacts
    • 3 National Societies better equipped to provide effective and efficient programmes to the most vulnerable people in their target communities.
    • The development of new approaches and tools for capacity building to be shared regionally and inter-regionally, with particular emphasis on the assessment of institutional needs, the measuring of impact, and assessing the effectiveness of methodologies through their practical application.
    • An enhanced capacity within the Federation and its Secretariat to manage in a systematic manner capacity building activities in a wide variety of political, social, economic and cultural environments.
  4. Features in line with the Agenda for Action
    This project contributes to organisational learning about civil society capacity building in such areas as governance, branch/headquarters relationships, strategies for branch development and fundraising. Sharing values, working methods and results will promote learning partnerships among African National Societies and with other Societies and donors in other parts of the world.
