II. Project / programme description

  1. Objectives
    • Initiate the African Red Cross / Red Crescent Health Initiative 2010 (ARCHI 2010), a process to review the priorities for RC/RC health support to Africa until the year 2010.
    • Develop options and a flexible framework for a strategy (2000-2010) to strengthen African RC/RC Societies' capacities to respond more effectively to tomorrow's basic health needs of the populations served by RC/RC Societies.
  2. Activities / contents (for 1999):
    • Analyse and organise findings of 1998 field visit reports into the ARCHI 2010 information database.
    • Begin building a flexible framework of health priorities and options for RC/RC engagement.
    • Establish an ARCHI 2010 expert committee to review and advise on ARCHI 2010 strategy.
    • Conduct five sub-regional health strategy meetings with African NS, MoHs and other partners.
    • Conduct one-day African Health Strategy Pre-Conference (October 1999).
    • Support dissemination of African Health Strategy (ARCHI 2010).
  3. Expected outcomes / impact (by end 1999):
    • African NS committed and engaged in ARCHI process.
    • African MoHs and selected international organisations aware of and involved in process.
    • Development of plan of action to support African NS health programming capacity.
  4. Features in line with the Agenda for Action:
    This project contributes to building the capacity of African National RC/RC Societies to play a meaningful role as civil society agents in their own countries by contributing to the promotion of citizens' health in cooperation with governmental and international organisations.
