II. Project / program description

  1. Objectives
    To improve the supply of water in Ouagadougou by providing an earth dam in Ziga on the Nakambe River, with a catchment chamber of 200 million cubic meters.
  2. Activities / contents
    To provide an earth dam; a treatment station with 2 storage tanks of 3,000 m3 each; three pumping stations of 3,150 m3 per hour each, for raw and treated water; a control centre; a network system to convey water to the town; a surge tank of 5,400 m3 in Boubtenga; a distribution network; a feeder road to the installations; and a medium voltage electric line for the pumps.
  3. Expected outcomes / impacts
    It is expected that the construction of the reservoirs and the provision of drinking water will boost industrial, agricultural and commercial activities. The project is expected to serve over one million people by the year 2000.
  4. Features in line with the Agenda for Action
    By improving their health, hygiene and job opportunities, the project will benefit the poor living in the catchment area.
