II. Project / program description

  1. Objectives
    The overall goal of the initiative is to assist in the improvement of integrated water resources management in Southern Africa. The two immediate objectives are to raise awareness and understanding of sustainable use of water resources and to assist in creating integrated management of shared water resources.
  2. Activities / contents
    The Sustainable Management of Water Resources in Southern Africa initiative consists of several activities. For instance has a number of awareness raising projects in collaboration with NGOs and projects on the management of shared river basins started during the last years. Seminars, funds for research and method development, support to regional networks are other activities included in the programme.
  3. Expected outcomes / impacts
    The Swedish initiative has been taken as a response to the region's endeavours to achieve sustainable management of water resources. This will be achieved by supporting regional initiatives in this field both financially and technically.
    An expected outcome of the support is increased awareness and competence concerning water resource management, prevention of domestic and international conflicts related to water, environmental surveying, methods of reaching better water use efficiency and research among countries in the region.
