II. Project / program description

  1. Objectives
    To reduce the population growth rate by promoting family planning, while taking appropriate measures to solve fundamental issues which lead to population increase in developing countries, such as high infant maternal mortality rate, low level of education, and status of women. Japan has also supported the cooperation for prevention of HIV/AIDS.
  2. Activities / contents
    To promote the GII, Japan has dispatched Project Formulation Missions to Ghana, Tanzania, Kenya, Senegal and Zimbabwe in the African region, and is planning to send the next mission to Zambia. As a result of these missions, a number of GII projects have been already formulated to support Family Planning/AIDS prevention plans, HIV/AIDS surveillance systems etc.
  3. Expected outcomes / impacts
    Improvement in the health condition of the people living in Africa as a whole, through slowing down the population growth rate and the preventing the pandemic of HIV/AIDS.
  4. Features in line with the Agenda for Action
    This initiative supports African efforts to control population growth, promote family planning and prevent HIV/AIDS in Africa.
