II. Project / program description

  1. Objectives

    To eradicate poliomyelitis from the African continent by 2000
  2. Activities / contents

    Japan and the US have played a key role in the success of efforts to eradicate polio worldwide providing vaccine and equipment within the framework of the Japan-US Common Agenda. Japan and the US will reaffirm and strengthen the commitment to end the scourge of this disease from the African continent through expanding cooperative eradication efforts at the grass- roots level by US Peace Corps Volunteers and the Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers.

    Japan will conduct Acute Flaccid Paralysis (AFP) surveillance. Japan and the US also continues to provide vaccine and cold chains.
  3. Expected outcomes / impacts

    (1) Eradication of poliomyelitis from the African countries
    (2) Reducing the infant mortality rate
    (3) Increase of immunization services
    (4) Enhance public awareness and community participation
  4. Features in line with the Agenda for Action

    This project is expected to contribute to improving the health situation in Africa, particularly children's, by an effective donor coordination.
