II. Project / program description

  1. Objectives
    To promote the prevention and control of parasitic diseases which cause serious health problems for people living in developing countries and constitute a major disrupting factor for their social stability and economic progress.
  2. Activities / contents
    Japan's intention, expressed by former Prime Minister Hashimoto at the Birmingham Summit, is to help developing countries to improve their capacity and information exchange for parasitic diseases control through establishing centers in Asia and Africa for training and research activities, and through building a network including these centers in collaboration with WHO. Japan plans to make financial and technical contributions to the establishment of such centers in Ghana and Kenya. Each center is expected to become a core center in each region to provide training courses for those who will be involved in planning for parasitic control in each country as well as field workers with the emphasis on the improvement of public health condition in community level.
  3. Expected outcomes / impacts
    The centers offer training and operational reseach for parasitic disease control. They will be established in Africa and Asia with a global network for parasitic disease control in close collaboration with WHO. This project will strengthen capacity building for prevention, treatment and care for parasitic diseases, including malaria, thereby reducing their mortality rates and improving the public health standards of the people of the Region.
  4. Features in line with the Agenda for Action
    This project will promote regional cooperation and integration for parasitic disease control and improvent of public health on the African continent. South-south cooperation among African and Asian countries through its network with WHO and exchange in training and research will be promoted.
