II. Project / program description

  1. Objectives
    Improving the services provided by church- and state-run health facilities and church-run secondary schools.
  2. Activities / contents
    Supply and distribution of textbooks and teachers' reference books for the natural science subjects, rehabilitation and equipment of laboratories, rehabilitation of school buildings and construction of staff houses; all of the preceding for church-run secondary schools only. rehabilitation and equipment of health facilities and construction of staff houses primarily in the four districts of Bunda, Dodoma, Sengerema and Tunduru; construction and equipment of four zonal Health Care Technical Services (workshops); procurement and distribution of medical drugs simple disposables and medical equipment; setting-up of revolving drug funds at church-run district hospitals.
  3. Expected outcomes / impacts
    The services in health and education provided by church-run facilities in collaboration with the government have improved and are placed within the respective sectoral reform processes.
  4. Features in line with the Agenda for Action
    The program's objectives and measures reflect the sector reforms currently under implementation in both health and education. In health, devolution of decision-making to and joint planning exercises at the district level are supported. In education, the state's renewed emphasis on science tuition by e.g. reintroducing practicals in the exams, is supported by the program's focus specifically on science teaching at secondary schools. The various church bodies in Tanzania as owners of the beneficiary health facilities and secondary schools are strongly involved in the implementation of the program.
