II. Project / program description

  1. Objectives
    • To institutionalize training in STD / HIV management at the Medical Training Colleges (MTCs) of Kenya.
    • To institutionalize effective STD / HIV management and control and primary health care facilities.
    • To encourage sexual behaviour change and promote risk awareness among high risk groups.
  2. Activities / contents
    • Revising and updating STD / HIV curriculum at MTCs
    • Training of MTC tutors
    • Upgrading of training manual in syndromic management of STDs including counselling for STD and HIV prevention.
    • In-service training in STD management and supervision provided to health workers, supervisors and trainers at selected municipal clinics in Nairobi and Nakuru.
    • Replication of project model for STD management at sites supported by other donors
    • Strengthening community-based STD / HIV education activities among female commercial sex workers, and with NGOs working with other vulnerable groups especially male vulnerable group.
    • Pilot programme for expanding economic opportunities for female sex workers
  3. Expected outcomes / impacts
    • Improved pre-service training in STD / HIV management offered at Kenya's MTCs.
    • Effective STD / HIV management and control offered at municipal health and facilities
    • Expansion of project activities in Nairobi, Nakuru and other areas in Kenya
    • Increased noncom use among female sex workers
    • Reduction in dependence on sex work for income among vulnerable female groups
