II. Project / program description

  1. Objectives
    Heightening the awareness of North-South Centre quadrilogue partners (NGOs, Governments, Local Authorities and Parliamentarians) of major human rights developments and devising solidarity policies; Providing a Forum for debate on topical issues relating to human rights, civil society and governance in Africa; and for preparing activity proposals, to be relayed by the Centre's partners.
  2. Activities / contents
    In March 1994, wishing to give its a practical focus, the Centre decided to bring together parliamentarians and representatives of international organisations, NGOs and regional and local authorities to debate topical and international issues related to the protection of human rights. The Lisbon Forum meets every year in Lisbon.
  3. Expected outcomes / impact
    To establish direct working relations between international organisations, Southern and Northern NGOs, representatives of Southern and Northern Governments, parliamentarians and local and regional authorities as well as media: To raise awareness on issues related to human rights protection and conflicts.
  4. Features in line with the Agenda for Action
    This activity is in line with section 3 of the TICAD agenda for action, in particular the two sections relating to "Governance" and "Conflict Prevention". The Forum acts as an "Early Warning" mechanism for human rights violations and potential conflicts in Africa and to generate necessary political will to undertake action.
