II. Project / program description

  1. Objectives
    To provide a sustainable management of forestry resources and to guarantee a lasting and reliable supply of domestic wood fuel in Niger.
  2. Activities / contents
    The project aims at creating a participatory development of 172 villages forests (corresponding to a production of wood of approx. 80,000t per year) and conceiving a method for the development of forestry resources on agricultural land in order to supply fuel wood to the main urban centres. The participatory approach will establish democratic institutions at the base and will create jobs which will be a sources of income to the rural environment.
  3. Expected outcomes / impacts
    At the end of the project a national institutional set-up, i.e. Environmental Services and NGOs, will be able to continue the forestry development works on their own with fund form fiscal revenues.
  4. Features in line with the Agenda for Action
    The project will ensure a sustainable long-term management of wood resources thus significantly contribute to the fight against desertification.
