II.Project / program description

  1. Objectives
    To contribute to the revitalization and improvement of the quality, equity, cost effectiveness, management and monitoring of Tanzanian education services (particularly at primary level).
  2. Activities / contents
    The Sector Wide approach (SWAp) has emerged as an appropriate mode for aid, to ensure efficient and effective use of local and external resources. This approach requires that the Government maintains control of the process and that the implementation strategy is worked out in dialogue with all major stakeholders.
    In 1997 a total of IR£760,959 was provided for development of the Government of Tanzania's Education Sector Development Programme (ESDP) and for immediate activities planned for the initial stages of implementation.
  3. Expected outcomes / impacts
    Improvement in the education standards, particularly at primary level, of Tanzanian students.
  4. Features in line with the Agenda for Action
    The Sector Wide Programmes are in line with the policies set out in "Challenges and Opportunities Abroad: White Paper on Foreign Policy" published by the Government of Ireland in 1996.
