II.Project / program description
- Objectives
The project aims at supporting Government's efforts for attaining universal basic education by enhancing the participation of girls in the Northern Savannah areas and thus contributing to the development of the human resource potential of the project area. The Northern Savannah area is characterised by low gross enrolment rations for both boys and girls in primary and junior secondary education.
- Activities / contents
Food assistance through providing a monthly take-home rations, will serve as an incentive for parents to enrol their girls in primary and junior secondary school, and to retain them once in school. Food assistance will compliment family intake, serve as an income transfer to the beneficiary households and will acquire added value during the dry season. The project will strengthen Government capacity by providing training of counterparts including members of School Management Committees Parent-Teacher Associations and Educational Officials.
The number of beneficiaries is 18,000 (annual average over 5 years) and the total food commitment for the project is 8,748 metric tons.
- Expected outcomes / impacts
The project which is hundred per cent targeted to girls is expected to create an awareness among parents with regards to the importance of educating girls. The project will contribute to increase girl's enrolment and retention, to improving the attendance and to reduce the drop-out rate of girls in primary and junior secondary schools in the project regions.
- Features in line with the Agenda for Action
The present project is in line with the agenda of action in areas of poverty alleviation, education, health and prerequisites for development.
The project is in line with the Government's programme of free compulsory basic education for all children by the year 2020; and with WFP's mandate to provide food for growth and food for development.
