II. Project / program description

  1. Objectives
    To develop a national and cost-efficient strategy for teacher training which will significantly increase the number and quality of trained teachers in Zambia and improve the quality of teaching and learning in primary schools.
  2. Activities / contents
    An operational model for an integrated pre -and in-service teacher training strategy will be developed and tested at three of Zambia's ten teacher training colleges. A total of 700 teachers and 120 professors at the teacher training colleges will be involved. After the testing and approval of the National Master Plan for Teacher Education, it will be disseminated to all teacher training colleges in Zambia under a general Basic Education Sub-Sector Investment Programme (BESSIP). The three colleges will also be renovated and a maintenance plan will be developed.
  3. Expected outcomes / impacts
    A doubling of the output from the piloted training colleges, a revised teacher training curriculum and improvement in methodology and techniques of the pedagogic tutors at the colleges.

    Capacity-building.
