II.Project / program description

  1. Objectives
    The long term objective is to assist the Government in its strategy for providing basic education to children of school age, by contributing to the improvement of school attendance; to the reduction of absenteeism and drop-out rates and to relieve short-term hunger in the short run.
  2. Activities / contents
    The provision of a daily school meal to improve schoolchildren's attentiveness and to relieve short-term hunger during school hours. A pilot activity was introduced in the 96/97 school year to support girls enrolment and attendance in selected schools. Each girl regularly attending classes receives the incentive of a monthly take-home ration.
  3. Expected outcomes / impacts
    117,000 primary and secondary schoolchildren registered in 886 schools receive a daily meal, and in addition to that a take-home ration is distributed to 3,500 enrolled girls.
  4. Features in line with the Agenda for Action
    This WFP assistance is in line with the following Agenda's goals: achieve universal primary education by 2015 and eliminate gender disparity in primary education. No sustainable development could be achieved if these objectives are not reached.
