II.Project / program description
- Objectives
The project supports the national school canteen programme for primary schools. It will address the short-term hunger of the pupils, many of whom do not eat before coming to school. Food aid will also help to maintain the high attendance rates and prevent drop-out. WFP assistance is planned to scale down during this phase, while government and parents contributions will be progressively increased.
- Activities / contents
Schoolchildren receive a hot meal complemented by a snack for 180 days pre scholastic year (every school-day). Female cooks receive food rations as part payment for their services.
- Expected outcomes / impacts
An annual average of 77,600 pupils and 1,000 cooks are assisted. Primary enrolment and attendance rates, for both girls and boys continue to show an increasing trend.
- Features in line with the Agenda for Action
This WFP assistance is in line with the following Agenda's goals: achieve universal primary education by 2015 and eliminate gender disparity in primary education. No sustainable development could be achieved if these objectives are not reached.
