II.Project / program description

  1. Objectives
The project, originally launched in 1979, aims at maintaining an increased rate of enrolment, preventing drop-outs and stabilizing attendance, and improving the children's attention span and, ultimately, their learning capacity by relieving short-term hunger.
  2. Activities / contents
Food is provided to school children in the eight arid districts and in those division of semi-arid districts where food insecurity and educational needs coincide and are at their highest. A careful selection of beneficiaries based on educational criteria is undertaken while, at the same time, models and guidelines are developed for sustainable feeding programmes involving local communities, as WFP assistance is gradually scaled down over a five-year period. Based on this strategy, the total number of beneficiaries will decrease from 350,000 during the first year to 75,000 in year five. A flexible strategy for the supply of WFP commodities has been developed which involves either direct import or local purchase, as appropriate.
  3. Expected outcomes / impacts
The project's expected outputs are as follows:
    1. enrolment at assisted pre-primary and primary schools will increase by an average of four percent a year, and the average daily attendance rates at assisted schools will be maintained at 80 percent minimum; and
    2. an annual average of 218,000 pre-primary day students will be fed for a total of 195 days a year (three 65-day school terms) and 16,600 pupils boarding at LBC schools will be fed for 273 days per scholastic year. The percentage of beneficiary distribution by gender is estimated at 38 girls and 62 boys.
  4. Features in line with the Agenda for Action
This WFP project is in line with the Agenda for action, as it covers one of its topics, i.e. education.
