II. Project / programme description

  1. Objectives
    Assist the Government in encouraging enrolment at the primary education level in two of the poorest and most food-insecure provinces of the country (Tulear and Mahajanga)
  2. Activities / contents
    • Provide foods to 30,000 school children
    • Ensure the availability of additional food which, will encourage pupils' enrolment and attendance.
    • Provide a midday meal to the teaching staff to encourage their participation in the smooth operation of the canteen (serving the meal, composition of menus).
    • Encourage volunteer work to form a household budget saving for the parents.
    • Encourage parents' work on construction of refectories, kitchen and food storerooms, by receiving family rations for 60 days during the lean period of the year.
  3. Expected outcomes / impacts
    • Ensuring the operation of school canteens in specific areas of the two provinces.
    • Supplying a pre-school snack of instant corn-soya-milk (ICSM)/sugar to the pupils of the assisted schools.
    • Giving one cooked meal a day to the children and teachers.
    • Improving the schools' infrastructure by building refectories, kitchen with improved ovens, and new school buildings; as well as, repair of these buildings and by making school gardens for educational purpose.
    • Training the teachers of the WFP-assisted schools in nutrition and in agricultural practices.
