The objective is to assist Mozambique in the reconstruction of its social and economic infrastructure. - Activities / contents
In 1997, the Government of Mozambique established a Foreign Debt Alleviation Fund (FDAF) to provide multilateral debt relief. Ireland contributed $2m in 1997, a further $2m in 1998 and will contribute a further $1m in 1999. Other donors who have indicated support include Sweden, Norway, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Finland and Denmark. - Expected outcomes / impacts
The Government of Mozambique will be able to divert scarce resources from servicing debt to poverty reduction projects. Participation in the FDAF also allows Ireland to participate at National Level in economic and budget planning discussions which are central to development in Mozambique. - Features in line with the Agenda for Action
Debt Relief in Mozambique is an element of the Mozambique Country Programme which is operated in line with the policies set out in "Challenges and Opportunities Abroad: White Paper on Foreign Policy" published by the Government of Ireland in 1996.
