- Objectives
To tackle the issue of excessive and stabilizing accumulation and transfers of small arms, which threatening public order and hindering post-conflict nation-building efforts even after conflicts have been settled, and from which several African countries and regions are seriously suffering. - Activities / contents
To hold three meetings participated by 23 experts under the following mandates authorized by the UN General Assembly resolution (52/38J): 1) to review the implementation of the recommendations of the report of the Panel of Governmental Experts on Small Arms (A/52/298), which were endorsed by the UN General Assembly last year, 2) to consider further actions to be recommended to be taken - Expected outcomes / impacts
To conclude a report on 1) and 2) above-mentioned to be submitted to the UN 54th General Assembly through the UN Secretary-General. The release of its report and the process of its deliberation will promote the implementation of the recommendations of the Panel Report, including support for a "proportional and integrated approach to security and development." - Features in line with the Agenda for Action
The participants are discussing the issue of small arms described in the "Guidelines for Actions" under the title, "3.2 Conflict Prevention and Post-Conflict Development", such as effective management and eventual destruction of small arms and demobilization of soldiers.
