- Objectives
The project will clear landmines surrounding the Massingir dam in province of Gaza, Republic of Mozambique. (The district is predominantly agricultural, with irrigation provided by the lake and river. However, much farmland is currently lying waste due to the mines.) - Activities / contents
The project will be funded by the governments of Japan and United States of America through a UNDP trust fund. CND will contract a South African company to implement the project.
The project will be done in three phases:- Phase 1 :Technical survey of entire Massingir area, mine clearance of airstip perimeter and related access roads, as well as access roads to the dam, verification and certification survey.
- Phase 2 : Mine clearance of the remaining mine fields verification and certification survey.
- Phase 3 : Technical survey in Chokwe and Chicualacuala areas.
- Expected outcomes / impact
The mine clearance is necessary to start a comprehensive rehabilitation programme for the dam. The predominantly rural population living in district of Massingir will be benefitted from the improved conditions for agriculture stemming from the rehabilitation of the dam and its related irrigation system. Indirect beneficiaries will be other people living in the district, because rehabilitation of the dam will give impetus to general social and commercial development. - Features in line with the Agenda for Action
This project will be implemented through cooperaton among UNDP, Mozambique(CND), United States of America, Japan and South Africa.
