II. Project / program description

  1. Objectives
Before the broken out of the internal conflict on 7 June 1998, WFP assistance to the country was focused on the primary education and health sectors. Two development projects (school feeding and vulnerable group feeding/mother-child care) were on-going for a total value of U$ 17.4 million, supporting government's policies to increase enrolment and attendance rates at primary and secondary schools; as well as provision of health care to children below 5 years and to nursing and pregnant mothers. This food assistance has been interrupted due the above mentioned conflict, which has forced 350,000 people to quit the capital Bissau and seek for refugee in the countryside, particularly in the eastern regions of Gabu and Bafata. The current emergency food assistance to these Internal Displaced People has the objectives to ensure that they have access to sufficient amounts of food; to prevent deterioration of the nutritional status and to prevent mass refugee population movement to the neighboring countries. As soon as emergency resources will be distributed and the political and security situation will improve, the Programme would focus their cooperation in rehabilitation and reconstruction activities, which as this moment is hard to estimate their needs.
  2. Activities / contents
Free food distribution to internal displaced people, with a general family ration and a supplementary one for vulnerable people.
  3. Expected outcomes / impacts
350,000 people affected by the conflict, assisted by food aid during 6 month.
  4. Features in line with the Agenda for Action
The present project is in line with the agenda for action in areas of poverty alleviation, prerequisites development, conflict prevention and post-conflict development.
