II. Project / Programme description

  1. Objectives
With a strategy to create as much synergy as possible in the collaboration of the support provided by multi and bilaterals donors and other partners, the project will focus on sensitising and training associations of the civil society (groups of women, youths, foundations, unions, etc.) already involved in this area. Based on these training sessions and the manuals which will be developed by the UNVs, these associations will themselves convey the techniques of peaceful conflict resolution to other groups and other levels of the population, thereby ensuring the sustainability of the project.
  2. Activities / contents
The activities of the project will be in: identification of potential partner groups, surveys on the role of the civil society in the prevention of conflicts in Burundi, training sessions, seminars, sensitisation campaigns; and the development of manuals on the peaceful resolution of conflicts. To do this, the mixed team approach will be used: 2 international UNVs will be based in Bujumbura in order to co-ordinate the activities of the project and liaise with the main partners, the Government, UNESCO, UNDP and UNICEF. They will also undertake field missions in order to support the 10 national UNVs, who will be based in several Provincial capitals in order to work closely with the concerned local associations and communities.
  3. Expected outcomes / impacts
The expected outcome of the project is a strengthened capacity of the civil society to play a concrete role in the process towards sustainable peace. The indirect impact of restoration of peace and national reconciliation will be to re-establish the necessary environment for sustainable social and economic development.
  4. Features in line with the Agenda for Action
As stated above, the project will participate in restoring of an enabling environment for national reconciliation and human development. Furthermore, as it will tackle a typical problem of post-conflict countries, it could serve as an example for duplication in other countries of the Great Lakes Region.
