II. Project / program description

  1. Objectives
    (1) To facilitate the repatriation of refugees and promote the sustainable reintegration of returnees as well as internally displaced persons into the communities of their origin in Mali and the Niger. The project will benefit a total of some 150,000 persons.
    (2) To improve basic rights of women among returnees (refugees/displaced persons) as well as the local population through the implementation of micro projects specially designed to assist and empower women economically.
  2. Activities / contents
    Implementation of micro projects (Quick impact Projects) in the areas of high concentration of returnees (more than 400 projects at 200 different sites) which include:
    • managing agricultural equipment
    • creating cereal banks
    • supplying seeds and pesticides
    • supporting village pharmacies
    • income-generating activities such as small-scale trading, handicrafts and market-gardening
    • construction of basic infrastructure in cooperation with WFP (Food for Work)
  3. Expected outcomes / impacts
    (1) Beneficiaries will achieve self-sufficiency to the extent possible
    (2) Basic living conditions of the communities of high concentration of returnees will be improved
    (3) Local economy will be improved
    (4) Women will become economically more independent which will improve their status in the society
