II. Project / program description

  1. Objectives
    To assist SADC in its efforts to increase regional cooperation within the areas of peace and security through the establishment of a regional peacekeeping capacity with a view to contributing to an enhancement of the stability of the region and thus improving the prospects for economic cooperation, growth and social progress.
  2. Activities / contents
    The project supports the establishment of a Regional Peacekeeping Training Centre (RPTC) in Zimbabwe, which will coordinate peacekeeping training activities between SADC countries. The project supports training activities at RPTC and the conduct of seminars and study tours. During the project period, 400 persons will receive 2-3 weeks training at the centre, 12 persons from the region will attend Nordic UN courses, and 12 SADC trainers will attend a Danish basic peacekeeping course. In January 1998, a delegation of SADC Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Defence visited Denmark and Bosnia to benefit from Danish peacekeeping experience. A Danish Military Adviser is attached to the RPTC.
  3. Expected outcomes / impact
    The RPTC will facilitate the development of a regional peacekeeping capacity within the framework of SADC with a view to participation in preventive actions and peacekeeping operations in the region and elsewhere on the African continent.
