II. Project / program description

  1. Objectives
    Setting up a network as a tool to encourage joint research and capacity building for African development with effectiveness and efficiency
  2. Activities / contents
    Japan plans to initiate a network among development research and training institutes concerned. As the first step, Foundation for Advanced Studies on International Development (FASID) in Tokyo mobilizes some research institutes and universities mainly in Africa and in Asia to take joint research activities as well as to study modalities of a network.
    Other research and training institutes and international organizations are also expected to join this initiative with financial and/or substantial support in due course.
    A seminar hosted by FASID on 8, Sep. indicated that the joint research on Micro-Economies and Farmers in Africa should be embarked upon fiscal year 1999 and the network may consist of three components such as Steering Committee, Advisors and Coordinators.
    The participants of the seminar were as follows :
    University of Nairobi(Kenya), Agricultural Research Council(South Africa), CODESRIA(Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa, Senegal), University of Western Cape(South Africa), SOAS(School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, U.K.), University of Malaya(Malaysia), the Indonesian Forum(Indonesia)
  3. Expected outcomes / impact
    Concrete potential projects for development cooperation and capacity building will emerge from joint research activities that will also contribute to academic purposes.

    implementing joint research and formulateing feasible program for capacity building
